Extract: Black Mirror (season 3, episode 4, ‘San Junipero’, 2016 dir. Harris)
This scene starts with an aerial shot to a mid-shot of a car with a girl walking then the camera follows her on a dolly and she stops to look at Tv and then transition into an over the shoulder shot of what she is looking at. She looks at people walking into a club and it zooms in on them and refocuses to her as she walks in. she sits down at the club when the girl she followed in and it focus is on her wile the main character is in the back. There are many other over the shoulder shots where it focuses on the person they are looking at. There are also many scenes where there is just a hint of zoom, but it puts things into perspective.
The sound is very difficult it starts with a sound of a piano to really calm the viewer down. Then sound mixes to the radio of the car and then with noise coming from the club and as she comes close to the tv that mixes with the piano and background music of the club. She walks in the club and there is the music from the club and the people in the club mixing. The sound can be as subtle as when she gets close to the arcade games it gets loud and the club goes to background. Whenever two people are talking in the club, they are clear, but the noise of the club never goes down.
The mise-en-scene is very interesting because there it is almost the main character is the odd ball compared to everyone else, she has no make up on and mostly everyone else does. She has shorter hair than every other girl. It is darker in the club. When they are in the arcade area and the guy asked if she wanted to play the car game, she looked intrigued but then the car crashed and she kind of backed away as if she had some sort of trauma. The other girls in the club also a lot of them have earrings on and she is the only one with glasses on. Again, hitting that she is odd compared to everyone else.
The editing has many jump cuts and there are not many visual effects to the scene shown. There is an insert to when they girl and guy walk in together. There are also many eyeline matches. There aren’t many other transitions because it was only a five minute clip and there is only one scene.
